Wired networks will be installed in category 5 cabling to run at 100mbps which is the current industry standard for wired networks. Two machines can be connected together without the need for a network hub or switch but connecting three or more machines together will require some additional hardware, a power point and a suitable location for the equipment which can generally be fitted in a small cupboard or under a desk. An A.D.S.L. modem can be incorporated for broadband users giving all machines on the network access to the internet independent of connection sharing with one machines own connection. Anti virus software is recommended if your network is to be connected to the internet and firewall software ( if not incorporated within the router ) should also be used to reduce the risk from viruses and external hacking

 

Wireless networks will be installed to run at 54mbps which is the current industry standard for wireless networks. Wireless Networking is becoming extremely popular and has the advantage of not requiring cables to be run to each computer. It is approximately 50% slower than a current wired network. an A.D.S.L. modem can be incorporated for broadband users giving all machines on the network access to the internet independent of connection sharing with one machines own connection. Awireless system is still approximately 100 times faster than a regular 512 kbps broadband connection so you will not notice the reduction on using the internet even with multiple machines as the speed restriction will still be at the internet connection. The speed difference will only be noticed when exchanging large files between computers such as pictures or video files so if you do a lot of this a wired network may be more suitable.
